Pictures of our Visiting Teaching Brunch

Many of you wanted to see our "Queen Bee" Sister Proctor up on the blog...sadly, hers is the one picture that didn't work out!! It showed up on the screen, but apparently really didn't work out. SORRY!!!! She sure was cute though. You can see her in some of the other pictures. I made a slide show of the rest of the pictures from the brunch. Don't forget, we are putting together a Picture Directory so that we all have a "face to go with the name." Don't be shy and smile pretty when it's your turn to get your picture done! Thanks for your cooperation in this project :)

Recognizing the Spirit

Before I get to the very moving and inspirational lesson we had today from Sis. Schiess, let me first go over the announcements and good news minute. First, we had a very successful Visiting Teaching Brunch saturday. I hope that for those who were in attendance you enjoyed yourselves, as well as, caught the "bug" of visiting teaching. Thank you to all who came and to those who participated in the skit. If you did not get your new VT assignment, please contact a member of the presidency and we will get it to you. Thanks Sally for all of your hard work in helping us to put that together. Thank you Sis. Allison in getting the assignments ready. Mark on your calendars the RS Birthday Retreat. It's a two day party and we hope that you will all be able to attend if not all, part of what we have planned. March 26 and 27. More to come on that. Book club is Feb. 10 and we are reading C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters. Stake blood drive Feb. 17-sign-ups to come soon. Good News Minute: Jean Wallin proudly announced the arrival of her 27th grandchild! Wow! Peggy Bishop's grandson was ordained an Elder. Can't wait to hear about where he goes on his mission! Robyn Peterson couldn't remember the exact name but her nephew won the "Gatorade of the Year" award for all of the state of Utah. Way to go! Karen McCandless had a "proud mother moment" and announced that her son Matthew(?) is getting married to a very nice girl and will be married in the temple. Congrats to you Karen for raising a fine young man! After getting the "stink eye" from Sis. Makin, Sister Miranda Proctor announced that she also recently became engaged. Congratulations and we look forward to the happy occassion!
Now, onto the wonderful lesson that we had today. Sis. Schiess began her lesson with a quick review on what the Holy Ghost is. We discussed the difference between just feeling the spirit and having the gift of the spirit. Then she asked us to think for a whole 30 seconds about when was the first time we had felt the spirit and recognized that it was the Holy Ghost. For most, myself included, it was very hard to pinpoint the actual time but a few times stood out to me in particular. Many shared their experiences and it was wonderful to regain a testimony of the Holy Ghost by listening to those. In fact, most of the lesson was people sharing different experiences that they had. We learned that there are different ways to feel the spirit and that we need to ask for it sometimes. We talked about having quiet moments where we can feel the spirit and how to teach our children about when they feel the spirit. It was a very moving lesson and I know that all who were there felt the spirit and that we now all have a better understanding and appreciation of that feeling. Most importantly we need to share those experiences and help others recognize the feelings and promptings of the spirit. Thank you Sis. Schiess for that wonderful lesson!

Congratulations!!

Congratulations to Jason and Lacey Tisdale who welcomed their second child into their family. James Don was born Monday Jan. 18 weighing in at 6 pounds 12 ounces. He had a little trouble with his blood sugar and heart rate so the doctors decided to take him a few weeks early. Both he and mom are at home now and doing fine. Little sister Paige isn't quite sure what to make of him yet, but she'll catch on quick! Jason is currently unemployed right now and they could use some girl clothes size 3t, baby boy clothes and most importantly DIAPERS! If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. Jason is also hoping to become an Elder so he can bless his son, so let's pray for him and his family.
CONGRATULATIONS!!

Our Heavenly Families

We had a great lesson this week, given by Sister Bond. She always does such a great job and brings a wonderful spirit with her. We talked about how we are Children of a Heavenly Father and what that means. Some interesting points that were brought up in the lesson were our personalities and talents and how we developed them in Heaven before we came to earth. I had never really thought about that before. She brought up the subject of Patriarchal Blessings and how they can be a guide in our lives. She also talked about they can mean different things when telling us certain things. I shared that when I received my patriarchal blessing I was disappointed because it didn't mention a word about my musical talents or my desire to be in the medical profession. It said that I would learn to can and garden and be self-sufficient. I remember thinking at the time I got my blessing..."Lord, do you even know me at all?" I DO NOT GARDEN! I can't even keep a fake plant alive. This last year I made it a "resolution" you might say, to really study and pray about my blessing to find out what it really means. I've learned so much in that short amount of time and things began to take on a new meaning for me. It was important for me to learn gardening skills and DEVELOP that talent because of the hard times that we live in. I planted a garden for the first time last year and I loved it! It didn't all work out perfectly, but we loved having fresh veggies from the garden and making salsa and spaghetti sauce and all sorts of yummy things. We saved a lot of money and I can't wait to do it again this year. That is just one example of the blessings I received by following and learning about my patriarchal blessing. I also discovered that the Lord didn't need to tell me that I had a musical talent or a love of caring for others because He knew that I already knew that and that I would pursue it anyway.
Ok, back to the lesson. She explained that while some of us have been foreordained to great things in this life...we all have been sent here to accomplish great things. Something that we all need to remember. It was a wonderful lesson. Read it and think about it this week!
In regards to announcements, we want to welcome Sister Leanne Bentley to our ward. Her son has recently moved in our ward and she says that she will be visiting quite frequently. CONGRATULATIONS go out to Lindsay Draper on her recent engagement! I have to admit that I've been waiting for that to be announced in the Good news minute. We all wish you a happy and joyful married life and look forward to the happy day in June.
The binders are being done a little differently now. Instead of having committees and groups, I am just going to put "ideas" in the binders. I am only putting a few copies of the ideas in there because I am tired of all the build-up of left over papers. If you want a copy of something in the binder you can write your name down or e-mail and I will get it to you. Or you can always check here as I will usually post them. There's also some scratch paper (left over programs) in the binders if you want to write these ideas down yourself. There's a book list in there which you can also get on the previous post. The cooking section has a really fun idea for Marshmallow Lollipops that will be great for Valentines Day. There's also a listing of FREE cooking classes and Crochet classes offered by Macey's Grocery Store and classes being offered by the USU extension. Look for those lists to be posted on here soon.
The biggest and most important announcement, is our Visiting Teaching Brunch THIS SATURDAY Jan. 23 at 10:30am. We will be handing out your new assignments so please make sure you come. There is going to be a fun little skit and great food so don't miss it!!!!!! (Please don't make me have to get the soap box out again and rant about Visiting Teaching and participating in Relief Society functions :) )
I hope you have a great week this week and I look forward to sis. Schiess' lesson next week.

Book Club

We had a lot of fun at book club this week discussing Gerald Lund's book "The Undaunted" about the 'Hole in the rock' Pioneers. What a fantastic book...even if it is like 800 pages long! So many things to learn from the pioneers and I even discovered that it is about some of Jason's ancestors. Elaine Jeppson discovered the same thing, as I'm sure you will too if you decide to read it. What great people they were. Sometimes I think they were the "chosen" ones instead of my generation. I mean, I'm still waiting to find out what we are "chosen" for? Anyway, not only was it a great discussion about these amazing people, but we also had fun conversing and eating afterwards. A huge THANK YOU goes to Peggy Bishop for hosting the club this month. February's book will be "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis. I haven't read this one, but I have read Mere Christianity and it is phenomenal! So I am really looking forward to reading this one. It will be hosted by Sherri McQuivey on Wed. Feb. 10 at 8pm so make sure you are there. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the list of books we will be reading for the rest of the year. I'm still trying to track down some authors and availability of a few books before I post it here. But we will have a list all ready on sunday in the binders.

Book Club

Don't forget that the book club will be meeting this wednesday Jan. 13, at 8pm at the home of Peggy Bishop. The book we will be discussing is Gerald Lund's "The Undaunted." Even if you haven't read the book, please join us if you want to participate with the club. We will be deciding the books for the remainder of the year. The book for February will be "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis for those who want to get an early start. See you there!

Ward Conference

Today we had our ward conference. Among many other changes in callings was one special one in particular. We'd like to welcome Brother Shane Young as Second Counselor in the Bishopric. We know he will do a great job and look forward to working with him. A huge THANK YOU goes to Brother John Schiess who was released as the Second Counselor in the Bishopric. He did a great job and we know that his family will be happy to have him back! As mentioned above, there were many changes done in the ward today and because I personally wasn't there (due to not feeling well during the night and needing extra time to get ready in the morning) I can't tell you what they all were, so ask around. In Relief Society today we had two wonderful lessons. The first one was given by our RS Teacher Sis. Jana Starr. She had the great opportunity of presenting our first lesson from our new manual. The lesson entitled "Our Heavenly Father" is a great one to start off the new year. She did an excellent job and really helped us all to feel the Spirit of the one whom we were discussing and also helped us to become closer to Him and know Him better. She had a wonderful outline of her lesson with many scriptures. She encourages us all to read the lesson (which is only a page and a half-we should all have time for that) and the scriptures that she had for us. I have included her outline below:
Gospel Principles Lesson 1
Our Heavenly Father

Heavenly Father's Desire for us, His children:
John 17:3
"This is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."
What are the attributes of God?
Jesus and Heavenly Father are one
- John 17:21-24
Jesus Intercessory prayer
(Christ's attributes are the same as the Father's attributes)
God and Christ are separate beings: Joseph Smith History 1:17
God sent Christ: John 17:3
Father: Acts 17:29 and 1 John 4:4
(We lived with him in Heaven 1 John 2:13)
(We are made in His own image Moses 2:26; 6:9)
(He has a body of flesh and bones D&C 130:22)
Creator: 3 Nephi 9:15 & Moses 2:1
Forgiving (Freely): Mosiah 26:22 and 30
(She put a special emphasis on the word freely. What a comfort it is to know that he forgives without hesitation and strings attached. That we have the gift of Repentance and his unconditional love.)
Perfect: Matt 5:48
Wants us to be like Him: Moses 1:39
"This is my work and my glory-to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man."
God of truth/cannot lie: Esther 3:12
Knows us and our hearts: Alma 18:32
Delights to bless: D&C 41:1
Loves us: John 3:16
God of Revelation: Amos 3:7
Good comes from Him: Alma 5:40
God wants us to be with Him: Matt 11:28
Teacher: D&C 4:7 (repeated 13 times in scripture)

I know that her lesson made me think about our Heavenly Father and Savior and all of the wonderful things that they have done, will do and continue to do for us. I think we were all spiritually fed today.
Our second lesson was given by sister Williams our Stake Relief Society President. The Stake theme for this year is Temples. I loved in her lesson that she taught us to take out the word "attend" the temple and use what she called a "higher" word and learn how to "worship" at the temple. She had us list all of the problems that we as sisters face. Then she explained that all of our problems and burdens can be helped and lessened by our attendance and WORSHIP at the temple. She encouraged all of us to worship as often as we can and to MAKE the time to go. She also read some very inspirational quotes of the various blessings we are promised by our worship at the temple. One of which was that our wayward children will come back to the fold, if not in this life then in the next. But we are promised that if we are faithful in attendance and in keeping covenants that they will come back! What a great blessing for those of us who have wayward children or even wayward siblings.
All in all it was a great meeting today and I hope you felt that Spirit like I did.
We would like to welcome sister Jessica Taylor and sister Julie Pierce into our ward. Congratulations goes to Sis. Kathryn Chamberlin who just got engaged! What an exciting time for her.
Please remember to put on your calendar Saturday Jan. 23 at 10:30am a very special breakfast in which we will be having a fun Visiting Teaching Workshop. You will also be getting your new assignments so PLEASE ATTEND!!!
Have a great week and as always, contact a member of the RS Presidency if you have a need or know of someone who does.

Welcome 2010!

Welcome to the New Year! Just a reminder that our ward meets at 9:00 am this year. Also, our ward's night for the building is now Tuesday instead of Thursday. The theme for the stake this year is Temples. Sister Kathryn Proctor (our beloved RS President) gave us a wonderful lesson on temples and their importance. We encourage you all to attend the temple at least once a month. As a ward we have set that goal to happen the first week of each month. So, this friday or saturday, grab your spouse, neighbor, friend, whoever to go to the temple with you this weekend. Make it a habit to schedule going every month and at the first of the month if possible. That way you'll have several other opportunities to go throughout the month. We gave each sister in attendance this sunday a tile with a temple and saying on it. If you did not get one or know of sisters who were not there and would like one, please let Sister Childs know so we can make more and have them for you.

We'd also like to encourage you to do your visiting teaching early in the month as well. Take the first week to schedule your appointments or set up a permanent time each month to visit with your sisters. For this month, please visit the sisters that you normally visit. We will have your new visiting teaching assignments ready for you for February. When you visit with your sisters, try and pray together as companions so that not only will you bring the Spirit of our loving Heavenly Father with you, but also so that you and your companion may be able to discern if your sisters have needs that need to be met or other "special" things that you will be able to help them with. Please let us know if there is anything that needs to go before the Bishop or if a sister has a specific need that we need to know about.

To go along with that, we will be having a special Relief Society Meeting on Saturday January 23 at 10:30 am. There will be a light brunch and this is where you will be receiving your new assignments. This is for ALL SISTERS and we encourage you to be there. I promise you will miss out on some fun things and great learning if you miss it!

Book Club will be meeting Wednesday the 13th at 8pm at Peggy Bishop's home. We are reading "The Undaunted" by Gerald Lund. This is a wonderful book about the "Hole in the Rock Pioneers" and it's one that you don't want to miss out on. If you are interested in participating in book club but won't be able to read this book, please come anyway because we will be handing out the list for the rest of the year and we always have fun chatting after we discuss the book.
Ward conference is this next sunday on the 10th and we will be having our Stake Relief Society Presidency there with us so please join us for that.

We have completed the two years on Joseph Smith and I don't know about you, but I sure enjoyed each and every lesson we had these last two years. Such great insight into the life of our beloved prophet and I learned a lot about the church in it's infancy. I look forward to this year where we will be studying out of the "Gospel Principles" manual. If you did not get a new manual, please contact a member of the presidency or you can get one next sunday in relief society.

We hope that you all had a great holiday and that you will be truly blessed this year. Setting new goals and resolutions is the fun part...doing them is the hard part...achieving them is the rewarding part...and life during it is the blessing. Good luck with your new resolutions and goals. By uniting and working together we can help each other improve ourselves and meet our goals this new year.
